Recycling Belts Chapter 2...

Bracelets!! There are a couple of ways to make belt bracelets. The first is a more chunky look. It's the easiest and cheapest one. All you have to do is wrap the belt around your arm and figure out how long it needs to be. Then you will cut it into a curved shape to resemble the end of a belt. It doesn't get any easier than that. Especially if you are using a belt with double holes because you won't even have to punch holes. For the star bracelet I had to punch a couple of holes in it. That was super duper easy too. In the snap kit I bought it had a tool that you could punch holes into things. The kit I bought was less than $3 at Walmart, so it wasn't anything fancy pants. Joe liked the chunky ones. He said they were "boss" so that sounds pretty good. To make the other bracelets I just added a snap. The snaps I bought really weren't quite heavy duty enough, but I made it work with some tweaking. They are perfect for say making a bracelet out of measuring tape. My kids all want one!! It's nice to be able to make them all for a couple bucks!!

Recycling Belts

I ran across these belts at D.I. yesterday.I had no idea what I could do with them, but it seemed like an interesting challenge. I mean, there must be some fun things you could do....and at a buck-fifty each, it wasn't too much of an investment if I couldn't figure something out. I was heading for the check out when I spotted this cute mini-skirt.I thought to myself, "Wow, I would look so hot in that!" Actually, no, that's not what I was thinking. I thought it would make a cute little purse. I love the tie in the front and the belt loops. I could also use one of my newly purchased belts for the handle. I turned the purse inside out and made it a little smaller by putting a seem up the side.I then sewed the bottom. Really easy...in fact, you know if I ever sew anything then it's the simplest thing you could ever make. I can't sew very well. I get angry with the sewing machine, so I have to pick and choose my battles.Anyhoo, I cut the belt so that once it was sewed on I could still see the buckle. I think that's the cute part. I tried to muscle it through the sewing machine, but I wasn't having much success, so I just took embroidery thread and sewed it around the holes in the belts so I didn't even have to go through it. Woohoo!! My first belt project!! I'm thinking I'd like to make some bracelets with one of the others. I need some pretty heavy duty snaps for that. Has anyone done something like that before and know the best thing to use?

Creative Cats Tuesday!!!

Welcome to Tuesday!! I can't believe another week has gone by. I'm pretty sure someone swiped a couple of days out from under us. I can't prove it, but I have my theories. Today is a show and tell for all you Creative Cats out there. If you are feeling like sharing some of your creativity with us this fine day please click on the Mr. Linky button and then copy and paste the web address of your blog post. It's just that easy!

Here is a thought about creativity that I enjoy:

Excerpted from The Creative Habit by Twyla Tharp

After so many years, I've learned that being creative is a full-time job with its own daily patterns. That's why writers, for example, like to establish routines for themselves. The most productive ones get started early in the morning, when the world is quiet, the phones aren't ringing, and their minds are rested, alert, and not yet polluted by other people's words. They might set a goal for themselves -- write fifteen hundred words, or stay at their desk until noon -- but the real secret is that they do this every day. In other words, they are disciplined. Over time, as the daily routines become second nature, discipline morphs into habit.

It's the same for any creative individual, whether it's a painter finding his way each morning to the easel, or a medical researcher returning daily to the laboratory. The routine is as much a part of the creative process as the lightning bolt of inspiration, maybe more. And this routine is available to everyone.

Creativity is a habit, and the best creativity is a result of good work habits.

I don't know about the full-time job thing, but I do agree with the idea of practicing your creativity. Exercising that part of yourself every day in one way or another. I think that creating things develops self worth and appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us. Being creative is energizing and it can help if you are suffering from depression or if you are feeling like you have lost the part of yourself that makes you you.

And another that I think is great:

"All children are artists, the problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up." ~Pablo Picasso

Easy Accents...

  1. Take a 4x4 piece of wood and cut it to the desired length.

  2. Sand and Paint the block.

  3. Wrap twine around the top.

  4. Tie on an accent piece. This can coordinate with whatever you happen to be decorating for. A little tea cup for a tea party, a few freshly cut flowers or even a monogrammed letter.
  5. Add a little wreath to the bottom and a candle to the top!
Yay for easy accents!!!!

The Money Tree..

My cutie Sis-in-law is graduating from BYU tomorrow! I'm so excited!! She is super awesome. I thought we would just give her money, but that sounded a wee bit boring so I decided to make her a money tree. I used some foam thing-a-ma-giggers, a dowel and a little blue vase from my cupboard....oh and of course...MONEY!! I used long pins with the balls on the ends to tack the cash down. If you want to try this don't use little push pins, they fall out. You need longer pins.

Ha ha! Ok, so it didn't turn out quite as cute as it looked in my mind...but I'm sure you could probably come up with a cute way to do it. My only advice would be to buy a smaller foam ball for the top. I had a hard time making it look full and so I added some paper filler to take up some space. I had good intentions of buying some moss or something to put on top of the foam in the vase, but I forgot so I just rounded up some coins from around the house..hey it works with the whole money theme right?? The other project I was working on today was a gift for a wedding shower on Saturday. I decided to try a stitching project. I have NO IDEA why I picked something that I have never done before-maybe I was just looking for a way to frustrate myself:) Everything on the planet went wrong with it. I'm really kind of in shock that it isn't in the garbage by now. I ran out of the color of thread I needed twice, I used spray adhesive to attach it to the backing and I glued it in backwards. Aarrgghhh{me shaking my clenched fist in the air}. It really wasn't all that bad. I think I'm still riding on yesterday's frustration of a gallon of paint exploding in the back of my van. Ever have one of those days?? Or one of those weeks?? At least I got to dance around with my kids to the High School Musical Soundtrack. That was the highlight of my day for sure! Yay!! It just turned into Friday!! I guess that means it's way past my bedtime! Have a great weekend!!

~10 Spot~ Add pizazz to tab top curtains.

Want to add a little something to your tab top curtains without spending a lot of cash??? I did, so I went to our good ol' neighborhood Walmart and bought some supplies. I found everything I needed for around 10 bucks. 3 red circle placemats for $2.96 each. one yard of jute ribbon for $.67. 1 piece of felt with a sticker backing for $.80. The total was about $11.

The first thing you are going to want to do is to cut the jute ribbon into 3 equal pieces.
Next you will fold one of them over and sew it to the back of a placemat with coordinating thread.
After you have sewn all of your tabs you get to do the fun design part! I googled "silhouette designs"and found one that I thought would be pretty easy to duplicate. I drew the design on the back of the sticker and cut it out.
It's so great having a sticker that you can just peel and stick to the placemat.
"Easy breezy nice and cheesy" as my kiddos would say.
I couldn't get a decent picture of the curtains next to the window because of the light so I hung it on a shelf to give you an idea of what it looks like. I think they would also make a cute valance for a kitchen window.

Creative Cats Tuesday

Last night I really wanted to make a pegboard for a friend that just had a baby. I went running with a neighbor and I was so wiped out afterwards that I didn't really have the energy to do it. Joe asked me what I was thinking about and then he went and made one for me. I only had to do the fun painting part! That was the coolest of cool. I was wondering what it would be like to paint with a sponge. I figured that I use sponge brushes all the time, so why not a regular sponge? I'll tell you why not, because it leaves little shreds on what you are painting. It's actually not all that bad if you wipe it with a damp rag right after to get all of the shreds off. It goes really quickly. I used the outline of a vinyl sticker for a stencil and painted a thin coat of the blue before the green to get the good crisp line. It's fun to practice doing things for boys because everything I make turns out kind of girly.
Well, Welcome to Creative Cats Tuesday!! It is a chance for you, yes YOU to link up and share something creative. Creative Cats welcomes creativity in any form- be it a fun new recipe, a tip about organizing, something that you have sewn or made....it doesn't even need to be something you have done yourself. It can also be something that inspires you( just make sure you get permission if you are linking to someone else's site). As you can see I'm not really picky. I just love to see your posts! Just click on Mr. Linky and then copy and paste the site. After you link, leave me a message so I can put your name on the blog page! Have fun!

Tried and True...

I read about a tried and true tip for decorating shelves the other day and thought I would give it a go. The tip is to imagine a huge letter Z drawn across the entire bookcase. The first thing you are going to want to do is take your most prominent pieces and display them on the points of the Z and then down the diagonal. Since this example only has 3 levels, it kind of resembles and X, but if you are using more than 3 you will angle your large decorations down the slant of your imaginary Z. I decided to stack my books in a slant to help give them the diagonal look. After you do that simply fill in the gaps with your smaller decor! I do like this tip. It helps give some direction and I think it does end up looking pretty balanced. Have a happy Monday-and don't forget that tomorrow is Creative Cats Tuesday if you'd like to share your an idea or a project that you have been working on!

ALOHA!!

I just got back from a wonderful trip with my sweet hubby to Hawaii!! We are celebrating our #10 this year and wanted to do something really fun! Thanks for the emails to check up on me:) That was very sweet!! We had such a blast!! It was unreal. I am so happy to be home though. It was nice to have a break from the kids, but I couldn't wait to be around them again!! After spending time away from them I just can't help but feel so happy to have my little darlings around me again!! For a week we were able to do whatever we wanted and not really think about anyone else. Don't get me wrong, it was incredibly fantastic, but I missed having 5 little people to serve. I'm really happy I get to be a mommy!! I hope you all had a wonderful Easter as well!!

I thought I'd share with you what has been on my mind lately....I've been thinking a lot about space management. Not the starry sky kind of space, but the space in my home. I want to put it to good use. I have some areas that are oddly built and seem like just a waste of space. Do you have any of those in your house? Sometimes I daydream about taking the square footage of my house and redistributing it so it makes a little more sense. It's kind of a fun day dream. For instance, I would love to take 20 square feet out of my bedroom and stick it into my laundry room. Wouldn't that be cool?? Completely impossible, but cool. Since that isn't a realistic option I have been dreaming about built-ins. Sticking cabinets and shelves into every spot of unused space. Now that would be fun wouldn't it??? Here are some built-in pics that I really enjoy. Not that any of them are a realistic option for this girls budget, but inspiring to look at anyhoo! This one is by Rschellings.
This lovely bench is by Custommade.
This is Jeff Smith Homes.
And this is Jd Bismack Contracting

I also love the paint choices of these rooms. I really like the brown and white . The green is great too. I think that it's easier to go with bold colors in a room when you have a huge white built-in taking up a majority of the wall. You can pretty much get away with any color. Although you will probably never see something like any of these in my home, the idea of making my rooms really efficient is exciting for me. I totally admire people who can take a very small area and utilize it well. It is a talent that I would someday like to have!

Show your personality with your decor

Don't you love going into other peoples homes and seeing how they decorate? I really enjoy it. I just love seeing all the different styles and most of the time I want to run home and try something that they've done. It's really hard for me to pick one style for my home because I like so many different things that I want to try and incorporate EVERYTHING that I like. That can be a bit non-cohesive and distracting, even for me. I wish I could just make everything in my house look like it belongs together. I was thinking about that this morning a bit and I was wondering what people might think my personality is like if they just walked into my home without meeting me. I thought it might be fun to try and decorate with my favorite things...even if they aren't traditionally decorations. I thought that might show more of my personality. One of my favorite things right now is my rain boots collection. OK, so it's not really a collection, I only have 2 pair, but I want to turn it into a collection. I am usually not a shoe person, but I am really drawn to fun rain boots. I took all my decorations off of my table and shelf in my entry way and set my boots on the table and then just put things around them that I felt matched the feeling. It was a really fun thing to do. I guess even if people think that's dorky or tacky at least it is something I enjoy right?? Plus it's functional. I like to be able to use things that I decorate with because I feel like it adds to the storage space in my house. What kind of style do you like?? My husband is a big contemporary fan. I am drawn to more of a french country/shabby chic/traditional look so our styles don't really jive very well. At least he seem to be fine with whatever I do. Do you try and incorporate your spouses tastes into your decorating?

A pegboard for a princess..

This morning I decided to play around a bit with pegboards. Initially I was going for a different look, but after I began it just kind of morphed into something else. That's alright. I try to be pretty flexible and change things up if they aren't working the way that I want them to. To get this look I created a pink color by mixing paints that resembled the pink of my Gerber Daisies.I painted the board pink and after it dried I painted over the top with white. Once the white was dry I sanded it down with steel wool so that the pink would show through.I did the opposite with my pegs. I painted them white and topped with pink. After sanding the whole thing down I rubbed it with gel stain. The fun part was taking the Gerber Daisies apart and cutting a larger hole in the bottom to fit the end of the peg through. After placing a few pieces of the flower onto the peg I put wood glue on the peg and hammered it into the board using a cloth to protect the paint.Have a happy Wednesday! It's more like Winds-day here.
