Sprucing up the Kitchen Island

I was antsy for a project yesterday and chose the kitchen island as my unsuspecting target.

I had a little bit of cash, so I ran to The Home Depot and picked up some primed mdf boards.

It was serendipitous that I also found some bead board scraps for $.51 each

I wanted to get as much of the project done as I could before The Joe got home and felt obligated to help. I cut the bead board into strips using the table saw and tacked them to the top of the island.

Then I made a paper pattern of what I wanted the supports to look like and cut 6 of them using the bandsaw.

That's when The Joe walked in the door and went to work cutting the angles of the shelves.
It's a good thing too! He's way more precise than I am.

We put 3 shelves together before we screwed them onto the island and then cut extra little pieces to put in between so it looked like the support board was one long piece underneath the shelf.

Time to paint!

And here she is now.

Total project cost $25

  1. Well if you aren't the creative one around here today!! This is definitely not something I would have thought of doing. Love how it turned out and how it adds so much to the island!

  4. It looks great. I really, really like it. I do have a question though... I am wondering if your bar stools still fit and if when you use the bar does it interfere with sitting comfortably without hitting the shelf?

  5. Good question. I do have a freakishly tall Island, so the chairs still fit comfortably. My kids have to sit up on their knees on my 30'' chairs just to reach the bar. I suppose if I bought 35'' stools, it might be an issue, but I have no intention of doing that because they are so expensive and because I think my kids would fall off and hurt themselves, so it works for me:)

  16. You are CRAZY talented. Seriously. I don't think I've ever commented before but I've been reading for awhile and am seriously amazed at the things you create that look so effortless. If I were to try these things there would likely be many broken things and lots of swearing involved. So for now, I'll just be watching you and hoping that when you run out of things to beautify you'll come on over to my house!
