One last shindig!

Welcome to our last linky party!
I've so loved having you stop by every week and link your amazing projects!
I've had the chance to meet so many talented people!

Thanks so much for sharing your projects with us all here on Poppies at Play!
I'll surely miss our weekly get togethers.

We're going to play it really casual this summer so that I can spend more time with these cute faces,

and a little less time in front of this:

Yes, there will still be projects posted throughout the summer, but not quite as consistently.

Today we're going out with a bang by having 2 parties!

You can link to our Creative Cats party, and we're also having a
Porch Party to celebrate all things outdoorsy!
You can choose one, or link to both if you have projects to share!

I'd like to share a little project to kick off the our porch party!

Plant stands...
You start out with a 4X4 cut to desired lengths and grab yourself a few fence post tops at Home Depot
The 4X4 is around $7 and the fence post tops are about $1.50

Screw them together and paint

Instead of using flower pots, I'm using IKEA garbage cans. They're only $1.99.
Is it pretty cheesy that I decorate my porch with garbage cans?!  He he he...

I drilled a few holes in the bottom for drainage.
If you do this, make sure you drill the holes close to the edge and don't push too hard, or the bottom will crack.

Drill the pot right onto the stand. Add hooks to the front of the board if you'd like to hang something from them.

I stuck some vinyl initials on the front and then loaded them with $4 Mums from Wal-Mart

Alrighty folks! I'm excited to see your great ideas for the outdoors!!

If your here for Creative Cats, link here!

Thanks so much for stopping by!!
XOXO,
Andy

okay...now it's thursday...

Hey there all you fabulous crafters!

Have you ever seen something and thought..."there is NO WAY I am paying that price for THAT!" It happens almost every time I look at the Pottery Barn catalog! So when I saw these adorable Hawaiian themed plaques I thought, "Hmmmm...maybe my mother in law could paint these for me!" I actually even called her, but she wasn't home...the more I looked at them I thought, "I bet I might be able to do it!" So I gave it a try! My favorites were the turtle one and the reef shark so that was my plan.

(image from Potter Barn kids)

I started with 2 12x12 boards that I had cut at Home Depot and then I had my friend use his router to knock off the edges a little so that they didn't look quite so "boardy".

Then I picked up some craft paint from the store....these are the colors I got...I tried to match the picture as closely as possible!

I painted each board the color of the background!

When my boards were dry I used a pencil to freehand the pictures on. It really wasn't too hard. The shapes are pretty basic. Then I used a small paint brush to start painting. The picture above is of the boards done, but not distressed and weathered.

Next step was to sand the boards A LOT! I did have to be careful not to sand off the eyes or too much of the words. So if you give this a go be careful! Then I rubbed them with a little Burnt Umber craft paint that I watered down. I applied it and then let it sit for a few seconds and wiped it off. Then I applied a coat or two of clear finish.

They aren't exactly like the ones in the origional picture, but I think I got close enough. I hope my nephews love them!

If you have something in the back of your mind that you have been wanting to copy...I say GO FOR IT!

wait...it's not Thursday...

Hey everyone! I just thought I would share a super quick Teacher Thank You Gift that I made for my kids teachers.

Supplies:
2x4 wood cut into 2: 3.5 and 1: 4.5
sand paper
sponge brush
black craft paint
abc block fronts (mine were created using gg digitals-School Days Kit)
modge podge

Sand the rough edges of your blocks.
paint them black and let dry

Using modge podge adhere your abc fronts to the blocks using a first coat to stick them on and then a 2nd coat going over the fronts. (My fronts were created digitally in Photoshop using the kit mentioned in the supplies, but get creative...your fronts could be made a ton of ways!)

Here is the finished product! I made 4 sets and each set probably cost $.50! Can't beat that price. Throw in some apple scented hand soap and they are ready to head out the door to the fabulous teachers who have inspired my kids all year!
