We had family in town last week and Sarah organized a really fun craft using bottle caps and washers. She had the kids decorate the inside of bottle caps with paper, stickers and gems and then glued a strong magnet on the back. She then hung a washer from some twine and the kids were able to magnetize their bottle caps to the washer necklaces. When they want a different look they can pull off the bottle cap and replace it with a different one. The kids had a blast!
Since we had to pull out the washers anyway, I thought I'd open up a steel stamping set that I bought about a year ago and have never used. I bought the set at Harbor Freight. The sets range from $5-$20. Relatively inexpensive and oh so entertaining.
Place the washer on concrete and stamp the letters with a hammer. It takes a little getting used to.
Some of the washers had old paint on them already.
Others I rubbed with gel stain or white paint after stamping.
Those look great! I have a set of those stamps but haven't got the hang of it yet.

Very, very cool! I got a set, too. But I swear I couldn't do it! It didn't matter how hard I hit, I couldn't seem to make a dent in the washers. Any tips or ideas on what I'm doing wrong and how I can make them work?
ReplyDeleteThanks!

I had the same issue the first time I tried about a year ago. I had really big washers, so that may have been the problem. I also figured that I should be able to stamp it with one hit. Now I hold the stamp and hit it two or three times to get a good impression. I hope that helps:)
ReplyDeleteYou probably need a metal block to go under it. I couldn't get a dent either, then with the block, it actually works, and is super easy! I got mine at the same place that I got the stamps. Makes a huge difference. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun idea! My kids would LOVE this!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the help!!!!! I really appreciate it!

I think those are the cutest stamped washers that I've seen.
ReplyDeleteI love this idea and would love to get a set, what size of set do you have?

ReplyDeleteThese are great! I found a steel stamping alphabet at a yard sale over the weekend, with specifically this idea in mind! Can't wait to try!
