Chalkboard signs~

This window was broken, so I replaced the glass with a pieces of chalkboard.  

I had intended on just using it for messages, but I really do love having a black smooth surface for vinyl, so I turned it into a sign.  I guess it can still be used for little messages as well...perhaps sharing moments of our day that make us happy.  

This is another chalkboard sign. The frame is made out of barn wood.  

The inside edge was routed so the sign would fit nicely inside.  

This vinyl is for sale for $5+shipping if you'd like to recreate this project. It fits on a 9" square.

And finally, a chalkboard that can actually be used as a chalkboard! This antique window was $2 at a garage sale.  I fell in love with the panels and the gorgeous original hardware.

The vinyl for this sign is 19''X11'' so you'll need a board at least that size.

Paint and sand the edges to distress

Peel off the paper back of the vinyl and lay the transfer tape onto your board.

Rub the transfer tape with a flat surface.

Gently peel the transfer tape off. If the vinyl doesn't stick to your board, lay it back down and rub again.

Happiness Sign

Last week my sweet mother had her birthday.  

I wanted to make her a sign that included part of one of her favorite scriptures.   I changed the "lived" to "live".

One of my favorite things about my mom is that she is truly happy. She believes that happiness is a choice, not a reaction to what life sends your way.  Despite intense physical pain her entire life, she always has a positive attitude.  She has often said that she is actually grateful for the set of trials that she has been given.

She believes that happiness comes by living the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  She is like the Savior in so many ways. She is patient, kind, long suffering, forgiving, intelligent, quick to show love, and a good listener.  I am so grateful for her example and her friendship.

Happy Birthday Mom.

Pumpkin Pie Sign...

For this sign I used an "as-is" cabinet door from IKEA. 

I painted it and then sanded off a majority of the paint.

Halloween sign

Even though it is not yet October, I'm in such a fall mood. I love it when the seasons change and I feel like it's happening at the right time.  I'm not pining for more summer months. I'm just excited to wear sweaters and to drive up in the canyon and see the changing leaves. 

I thought it might be fun to make a Halloween sign with a collection of words.

I painted a piece of scrap wood and made a collage of Halloween words out of vinyl with different fonts.

After applying the vinyl I rubbed the entire surface with gel stain.

 My kids were so excited about this sign. They loved reading all of the different words and with each one you'd hear,"oh yeah!".  I guess I'm not the only one who's looking forward to the season changing.

Die Job Chart, die

To be honest, job charts have never been my thing.  I haven't been able to make anything work well.  Instead I just have the kids clean their own rooms and then they ask me for their "Special Job".  I look around the house and see what needs to be done that day and have them do it.  That worked really well throughout the summer.  They knew they couldn't play until their special job was completed.

The school year has proven to be a little more difficult.  I am in more of a rush in the mornings and so it can be frustrating for me to stop what I'm doing and find a job for them.  It is also harder to enforce.  I can't keep them home from school if they don't get their work done.

I thought I would break down and try some kind of a chart.  I wanted to make it playful because my kids really like games. I also was also hoping to add a sense of urgency.

This is the only thing I could think of.

It's a job die.  After the kids have cleaned their room and taken care of their dirty clothes, they roll the die.  You'll want to be the first one done, so you have the first chance to roll.  Once a job has been rolled it's off limits to the other kids.

I had to make three a "Free Day".  Three is the magic number after all.

  

To make a Job Die, just cut a piece of a 4x4 into a square block.  We didn't have one handy so The Joe cut down a 6x6.  What a sweetheart.  The chop saw won't cut a block that size in one chop so he had to turn the block and make several cuts.  Super sweet, but if you can avoid going that route, please do.

Paint  your block.  Mine is green. I've heard it's not easy being green, so it's my goal to make all green things feel very loved.

Add vinyl.

We'll give it a try!  The kids are pretty excited about it so far!

My kids are loving this!! They've been racing to finish their rooms to be the first to roll.  The free day space is a big incentive. They even spend time practicing rolling. Ha ha ha..
