Painted Bar Stools

I can't tell you how excited I was to find tall bar stools for a few bucks at a yard sale.
I've wanted some since we moved in, but they are so very costly.

I wanted to paint and reupholster to give them a little character, but I didn't want to spend hours working on them.

That's why I went with spray paint.

Admittedly I rarely use spray paint. I don't feel like I have as much control as I do with a brush.
I do however appreciate the speed spray brings to the table.

I painted all three in less than an hour. Oh Yeah, that's what I'm talking about!!
Perfect for us busy ladies!!

A couple of weeks ago I was thumbing through a magazine and fell in love with some particularly charming chairs that had drawer pulls on the back of them and thought:

 I MUST HAVE THEM!!!!

I didn't want to put holes into the chairs so I glued the drawer pulls on with E-6000.
 Such a heavenly adhesive.

I ordered some vinyl fabric from fabric.com.  It was a little over 4 bones a yard and then I found a coupon code online which brought the price down 30%.

I realize I am probably shooting myself in the foot by painting one chair pink. I'm sure that all three of my little princesses will be fighting up a storm from now on for the privilege of sitting there. My oldest daughter thankfully is past the pink stage. I'll totally be fighting for the yellow chair. It's my favorite of the three.

  4. Very cute! I like the drawer pulls in the back--what a fun little detail! I'm with you on the yellow one. It's funny: at my house there would most certainly be no fighting for the pink chair (I have three boys!).

I like the way you distressed the stools--I painted my barstools black a few months ago and distressed them, and now they've been banged up quite a bit--but you can't tell!

  12. I just love the retro colours you chose. Those drawer pulls are adorable. If I ever have chairs like these, I'm going to copy everything about yours.... :)

P.S. Did I say the fabric is cute? It is.

  13. Oh my word, I LOVE them! Can I invite myself to dinner *just* to sit on one? I'll even take the poor, not as loved white one. I think she's pretty, and the vinyl fabric really pops on her. :)

P.S. I'd bring dinner ... you wouldn't even need to cook.

  15. Sooo cute! Can I ask a total novice question? Do you have to do anything special with vinyl to make cushions -- I mean, can you just use a staple gun to attach it without it ripping?

See, I told you I'm new to this decorating thing ;)

  16. Thanks so much for all the sweet comments. Misty, you are cracking me up. Let's totally have dinner:)

Laura, it's the first time I've ever used it, so I'm pretty much a novice too. At first my staples went right thru the fabric, so I had to adjust the air compressor so that it wasn't shooting as hard. It works, you just have to put in a lot of staples. It's a little harder to manage around the corners, but totally worth it to be able to wipe off the seats.

  18. The stools look fabulous! You're so lucky to have come across not 1, not 2, but 3 cheap stools. Amazing luck. I wish I had your luck... I've been scavenging for stools for a while and still no luck. Anyway the stools are super great!

  19. I was waiting to see how they turned out! The distressing is just right. :) Am I imaging things or are there screw heads showing on the drawers pulls? (Even though you glued them on.) And, if you need to take them off.... is the glue easy to remove? I love the 3-color look too. :)
    Thanks for sharing.

  20. Yes, there are screw heads on the front of those pulls. If you were putting them on the real way, you would screw them from the back, so they have the screw heads on the front for decorative reasons. Works well for glueing! If you want to take them off, you just pry them off with a screw driver and sand off the remaining glue. Very easy.

Nicole, I know!! I was totally lucky. I was in shock!! I hope you come across some too!

  22. So cute, do you know the rules for height when purchasing stools? I just moved into a home and I can't seem to find any barstools that fit my counter height. any suggestions? My counter is 44 inches high or so, and 30in stools seem to be too short. slamfamily at gmail dot com

  24. I have to agree with you all, ladies! The colors of the bar stools look so cute and the drawer pull is just an awesome idea!! I would also love to find a cheap bar stool and place it together with my other hand forged iron bar stools, it will look fabulous on my kitchen especially with the hand forged iron chandeliers on my ceiling.

Andy, I look forward to seeing more of your creative ideas!
