I found this little end table at the thrift store months and months ago. It was a cute shape, but the finish was bad. It was only $5, though, and it didn't seem like it would take much to make it look good.
I thought I'd be able to sand off the old finish, but it only took a minute with my electric sander to see this wouldn't be the case. It had some kind of super thick, glossy lacquer that was scratched up, especially on the top.
I knew this top coat stuff had to go if this was going to look decent. So, I went and bought some spray stripper. I have never stripped anything before and spray seemed like an easy, safe way to go. I just sprayed it on, waited 15 minutes, and then scraped it off.
Here's the pile of gooey stuff I got off of it.
It was looking much better after this, but I still did some sanding to smooth it out.
Then, I sprayed it with some gray primer.
And then sprayed on some red....
Then, I took my trusty dark walnut stain and brushed on some stain and wiped it off. I would really like to move on to using glaze for this type of thing, but I don't have any. I'll someday justify the spending of money to get some, but it's hard when my little can of stain works just fine, ya know?
Viola! A little red end table. I still need to get a handle for it, but I just haven't gotten to the store to find one that will fit the holes. Just imagine whatever handle you think would look best. :)
